The Yellow Headed Amazon Parrots have stunning markings. Usually ranging in size from 14-17 inches long, the yellow headed parrot’s markings are unique. Their body feathers are bright green. Their flight feathers range from black to purple to blue, sometimes with a touch of red on the tips. But the most striking feature of the Yellow Headed Amazon Parrot is, well, their yellow head feathers. Their bright, dandelion yellow head feathers attract and demand attention. Increasingly Rare
As the Yellow Headed Amazon Parrot increases in popularity, so it increases in rarity. Found mainly in the coastal regions of Central and South America, mainly in countries such as Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, and Belize, the yellow headed parrot is now considered rare and on the endangered list because of poaching and illegal trade.
Also, the yellow parrot’s endangerment is due to deforestation, resulting in the loss of their nesting habitat.
Like the African Grey Parrot, the Yellow Headed Amazon Parrot’s high intelligence level and ability to mimic vocal sounds make them a popular pet choice. Although, not all speak, most have the ability if given the proper love, patience, and attention. Yellow parrots are very vocal birds. Said to be the loudest of the Amazon parrot species, the yellow parrot’s screeching can easily be adjusted and trained into mimicking the vocabulary of their owners if given the opportunity, time, and routine instructions.
Caring for your Yellow Headed Amazon Parrot
Also, because of their high intelligence level, Yellow Headed Amazon Parrots can be troublemakers. Easily bored, the yellow parrot can become destructive, if not given proper stimulation. The yellow parrot requires a variety of stimulating activities and routine consistency. It’s important that the yellow parrot have a large cage with enough room to fly and play, a variety of toys and perches, and a healthy, well-balance diet variety.
The Yellow Headed Amazon Parrot, like most parrot species, thrive when given a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, soft foods, protein pellets, and seed and nut mixes. Cuttlebones and mineral blocks can also aid with calcium needs. Foods that require gnawing and other chew toys will aid to remedy the yellow parrot’s destructive chewing and biting tendencies.
As with any parrot variety, the Yellow Headed Amazon Parrot requires special attention, love, patience, and quality care. Because their life expectancy is 60-80 years, if taken care of properly, the Yellow Headed Amazon Parrot can become a rewarding, entertaining friend for life.
